A Novel base on the great murder mystery from the 1930s

By Tony George

I just recently read Police at the Funeral, by Margery Allingham. It's a great murder mystery from the 1930s, with a quirky detective called Albert Campion. His main trait is his ability to be self-effacing and spout nonsense at will, while he's secretly thinking hard about criminal behavior. Throughout the book, his real identity is kept a secret, but he's clearly got upper-class connections, and it's fun to read the hints about who his family members might be. The plot follows Campion as he tries to solve the confusing murders of a series of family members, who all live in the same house under the rigid control of Great-Aunt Caroline. She runs the house like it's still the Victorian Era, and there are a lot of repressed tensions and anxieties in the family. I really enjoyed this blast from the past, because it has a great blend of funny and chilling moments.
