American Shaolin by Matthew Polly By Tony George A Book I recently read is American Shaolin by Matthew Polly This is a travel memoir about Matthew Polly who goes to China to learn Kung Fu from monks at the Shaolin temple. Polly starts out as a skinny, nerdy guy who wants to learn Kung Fu to prove to himself that he can because he was bullied as a kid. He learns Chinese in college, travels to China by himself in the 90s and finds the Shaolin temple where he pays to study with the monks. He starts of learning iron Kung Fu but later changes to kickboxing, which he learns pretty well by the end. This book was funny and light but also informative and almost more about what China was like in the early 90s than about Kung Fu. I would definitely recommend this book.
