Catcher in the Rye, One of the books I didn't like reading

One of the books I didn't like reading is Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger published in 1951. I read it in high school because it was required and I didn't want to get a bad grade in English class. I wish I'd never read it because I had no interest whatsoever in the uncontrolled sexual impulses, profanity, anger, and gloominess of the character. Holden Caufield basically narrates a period in his life when he is obviously confused, rebellious, self-seeking, and angry at everything. He travels around and tells us his experiences with a prostitute and others and even a possible homosexual experience with a professor. Who cares? I didn't want this junk in my mind as a 15-year-old and it was very disturbing. I hope my kids never read it. The main character was ridiculous, and I had no sympathy for him. I do enjoy To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee published in 1960. This is a classic American novel which reaches beyond to portray themes of courage and compassion. It also has humor and is told from a child's point of view. The book addresses serious issues such as racial prejudice in the south during this time period. Atticus Finch is an honorable man who loves his children and stands up to bigotry. The book should be a required read for school. |
