The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand
By Tony George
A Book I recently read is "The Fountainhead" by Ayn Rand, which falls into the genre of philosophical fiction. "The Fountainhead" is about an aspiring architect named Howard Roarke. Roarke is very philosophically stable. He believes, above all else, in the power of the human spirit and the unbridled potential of the individual when societal limitations are eliminated. Roarke faces many challenges in his career, including an ongoing lack of acceptance by other less talented individuals. "The Fountainhead" contains two key conflicts: First, the struggle between Roarke's spirit and an onslaught of criticism and judgment by lesser individuals. The second conflict concerns a woman (Dominique Francon) whom Roarke desires. Dominique desires Roarke as well, but considers herself undeserving. She pursues lesser men as a form of self-flagellation. Roarke's struggle against those who seek to hinder intellectual progress culminates in a violent and dramatic gesture in which Dominique is nearly killed. The experience shakes Ms. Francon and spurs her subsequent divorce. Dominique and Roarke finally come together, and Roarke's greatest architectural aspirations become a reality. I LOVED this book, and feel strongly that everyone should read it at some point or another. "The Fountainhead" has something for everyone -- Philosophy, Romance, Political Conflict, etc. It is incredibly enthralling, highly memorable and, above all else, inspiring. |
