The Talisman, one of the worst paperback book
By Tony George
One of the worse paperback books I have ever read was "The Talisman". Whenever I see anything with Stephen King's name attached to it, I assume it's going to keep me interested, but this 735 page book didn’t do a thing for me. Peter Straub also helped write this book. It’s about a young lad, Jack Sawyer, who must travel into another dimensional world called the Territories to try to save his mother from dying from cancer. It seems some humans have “doubles” from the Territories and such is the case of Jack’s mother, who in the Territories, just happens to have a double who is the Queen. She, too is dying. All Jack needs to do is drink this vile tasting stuff and he is magically transported to the Territories. His quest is to find a talisman that can save his mother. This book should have been condensed to half it’s size. The characters were contrived and, frankly, boring. A book I read I did enjoy, just happened to have been written by my friend, Jeanne Prevett Sable. It is called the "Seedkeepers of Crescentville". It’s based around a fictional town in Vermont full of rich characters like 90 plus year old “Gram” and Tiana, a curious little girl, and the towns struggle to maintain natural growing of vegetables by seed instead of being pushed into using seeds that can be used only once but produce more huge vegetables, but loaded full of chemicals. I loved the characters and the truth of what is happening now to seeds. Bigger is not always better. |
